Great info. I never believed the locally grown/organic produce tasting better thing until I actually did a taste test for myself. Even though normal grocery store produce like strawberries can be bigger in size, it is often because of chemicals that genetically modify the plants to make them grow larger fruit. Without genetic modification, fruit is a lot sweeter, and tastes better over all.

by Konrad Kaletsch, November 17, 2008
http://www.universaldesignresource.com/

In 1922 Emily Post wrote her guide to etiquette. It is often perceived as an obsolete set of behavioral rules for the rich people of high society. However, that interpretation misses its underlying core values of consideration, thoughtfulness and kindness. It is also misses the gained personal benefits such as confidence, self-respect and an instinctual feeling that one is doing the right thing. It misses understanding how an outward set of behavioral rules supports an inward and primary human need, that of belonging, and being a member of a society. What changes over time are the behaviors themselves, the manners. What hasn’t changed are the fundamental core values.

Whereas etiquette provides guidelines for person-to-person, universal design provides them for the environments we occupy and the tools we use; it is environment-to-person. No longer will building just be about shelter, function or good looks; universal design brings etiquette to how your home is crafted. A home or community that applies these guidelines is one that is inviting and welcoming to all; it is a well-mannered house. No longer is one shut out because an “ignorant” building unfairly impedes entry due to a limitation in physical ability. No longer does design marginalize those who are not 100% able-bodied.

Please consider posting more blogs on universal design and supporting people knowing about this socially sustainable approach to building. Please also add my website and blog as a resource; I will have a concise and comprehensive manual for home builders available in December.

Check out their website about Auralast. It is a great example of how JELD-WEN has made strides to increase the durability of their pine products. Their 20 year warranty on wood windows is twice that of other major manufacturers like Andersen, Pella, Kolbe, and Marvin. The same process is available on their commodity doors and carries a Lifetime warranty with that product. I would say that is pretty durable!

I'm a small local artist that creates functional works of art from reclaimed work and recycled metal. Check me furniture and home furnishings out!

CLARK Functional Art creates ancient/contemporary home furnishings from reclaimed exotic hardwoods such a Teak, Rosewood, Amboyna, and Padauk. Tree trunks of fallen trees hidden long ago are rediscovered and transformed into functional works of beauty such as dining tables, conference tables, burl wood sculptures, and more.
